Working in Finance

This page explains how to use the Finance routes that are currently visible in VerityLaw, while staying clear about which screens are operational review pages and which ones are still thin.

Product: VerityLaw
Module: Finance
Role: Billing user, finance support, legal operations, trust reviewer
Difficulty: Beginner
Time: 8 to 10 minutes
Last Updated: 2026-03-10
Version: Current repo baseline

Before You Start

  • Confirm you are in the Finance section of the sidebar.
  • Know whether you need billing review, time-entry review, or trust monitoring.
  • Use Documents, Billing, and Trust if you need the broader operational context.

What does Finance cover?

This manual covers:

  • Billing
  • Time Entries
  • Trust

Work from Billing first

  1. Open Billing.
  2. Review the headline amounts:
    • Unbilled WIP
    • Outstanding Invoices
    • Received This Month
  3. Use the tabs to move between:
    • Time Entries
    • Invoices
    • Payments
  4. Review the relevant table before switching screens.

How to use each Billing tab

Time Entries tab

Review:

  • Date
  • Case
  • Description
  • Duration
  • Billed
  • Rate
  • Amount

Invoices tab

Review:

  • Invoice number
  • Client
  • Status
  • Total
  • Due Date

Payments tab

Review:

  • Date
  • Invoice
  • Method
  • Amount
  • Reference

Use the Time Entries page carefully

  1. Open Time Entries.
  2. Review the Active Timer panel.
  3. Review the Manual Time Entry panel.
  4. Review the existing time-entry table at the bottom.

Honest scope note

The current Time Entries route loads existing entries, but the timer and manual-entry controls are thin in the confirmed UI:

  • the timer only toggles local page state
  • the timer display does not count up
  • the case selectors are empty on the page
  • the Add Entry button does not show a confirmed save flow

Treat Time Entries as a review-first screen unless your environment adds additional wiring.

Use Trust as a monitoring page

  1. Open Trust.
  2. Review the summary cards:
    • Total Trust Balance
    • Pending Authorisation
    • Last Reconciliation
  3. Review the Client Balances table.
  4. Review the Recent Transactions table.

Honest scope note

The New Deposit and New Disbursement buttons are visible, but the current page does not expose a confirmed follow-on form or save workflow. In the confirmed UI, treat Trust as a balance and transaction review page.

Common mistakes to avoid

"Billing and Time Entries are different data sets, so I should not compare them"

Why this happens: They are on separate screens.

Fix: Start in Billing and use the tabs first. Move to Time Entries only when you need the dedicated review page.

"The Trust buttons are visible, so cash posting is fully live here"

Why this happens: The UI exposes action buttons.

Fix: Confirm the downstream workflow in your environment before training users to post deposits or disbursements from this page.
